Jennifer Woods sent along another adventure from one of her students.
This is Century, a gelding who is (Iam told) 15 hands high. He stepped on the concrete lid of a septic tank and the lid flipped off and both his hind legs went in. As you can see, he was wedged pretty tight so we couldn't get straps around his hind quarters. I had the crew strap him at the armpits and we tied his tail (At the vet's insistence).
I wasn't so sure of the safety of tying the tail. I wanted to lift his front up a bit and get the other wide strap around his lower body, but the vet was adamant, and the owners went with him. At the end of the day, it's their horse and he takes responsibility. (This is the same vet that told us you can safely lift a horse out of a well by the head.) So he was hoisted that way (sedated). We lifted him level as he wasn't jammed, just unable to move. In the end, all was well and one very stinky horse wobbled his poor, stoned way back to his stall.
