The Old Man-- Chief

Our beloved Chief passed away on May 10th, 2007 -- one month short of his 34th birthday.

Chief came to us as a "rescue" -- one of many who passed through our home at that time. He had OCD -- a painful joint condition that caused him to limp on his right rear. He would never pass a vet inspection and so we took him.

He taught my husband, Michael, to ride. In fact, he taught many people to ride or to calm their fears of being around horses. He worked in a handicapped riding program. He was the "pony ride" for many little kids. In fact, one special child, Amber, at aged 5yrs old would walk out into the field to "catch" Chief. He would lower his head to the ground so Amber could halter him. She would lead him to the round pen, push him up against the fence, and climb up onto Chief's back. Chief would walk her around the pen until Amber tired, then she would slide off his back, sit on his front feet and pile sand on his hooves while Chief slept, guarding over her.

Chief was always gentle and safe with kids, even as he was nipping the person leading him as if to say, "Get this kid off me!" He never took a mis-step with them, however. He taught my mom to ride when she was 78. He cheerfully taught a woman named Crystal to ride. Crystal had terminal cancer and had lost the use of one arm. No problem for our boy! He was very gentle with her.

He was hell on other horses, however. He would chase them no matter their size or age, and would pin the other horses into a stall, then doze in the doorway. They dare not challenge him or they would be met by his teeth.

Chief was the person to whom I told my secrets, dreams and fears. I cried into his mane many, many times. He was the first to know about the book I wrote; first to hear of the plans for the publishing company and websites.

Chief will be missed so much.
